Public education in College Park is provided by Prince George’s County Public Schools. The district manages more than 200 schools in total, with about 11 of these zoned for College Park students. Hollywood Elementary and Paint Branch Elementary are located within College Park, while the other campuses are in neighboring communities.

The University of Maryland is the anchor of the College Park community. Founded in 1856, the University has become one of the Top 20 research universities in the country. The academic and research activities are complemented by championship sports and entertaining performing arts. Men’s basketball and football can be enjoyed at the Comcast Center and Byrd Stadium, respectively. Guests of the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center can take in the work of upcoming artists and learn more about the artistic process. The University’s academic programs include more than 120 undergraduate degrees and about 110 graduate degrees. The Phillip Merill College of Journalism and Robert H. Smith School of Business both enjoy excellent reputations.

College Park has strong historic ties to the transportation industry. U.S. Route 1 was actually built along one of the region’s main stagecoach routes dating back to the colonial era. The city also has been called the “cradle of American aviation,” because the Wright Brothers used College Park for early military flight training. In 1909, College Park Airport opened on the site selected by Wilbur Wright. Today, the facility is the oldest continuously operating airport in the country. Visitors can learn more about College Park’s role in the development of aviation by visiting the College Park Aviation Museum.

Recreation in College Park is largely family-oriented. Community events and free outdoor concerts give residents a chance to congregate and socialize. Parks provide the open space needed for fitness and playtime. Area parks include Indian Creek Park, Anacostia River Park, Northwest Branch Park and Greenbelt Park. The College Park Community Center also offers facilities, activities and classes.
